The Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­ti­on in Mag­de­burg is on­ce again pro­vi­ding fun­ding for pro­ve­nance re­se­arch pro­jects in the are­as of “Na­zi-Loo­ted Pro­per­ty” and “Co­lo­ni­al Con­texts”.

The next dead­li­ne for pro­po­sal sub­mis­si­on for long-term fun­ding in both fields is 1 Ju­ne 2022.

The Foun­da­ti­on funds in­di­vi­du­al, short-term re­se­arch in both are­as throug­hout the ye­ar wi­thout a ti­me li­mit.

Re­se­arch area “Na­zi-Loo­ted Pro­per­ty”

In the re­se­arch area “Na­zi-Loo­ted Pro­per­ty”, pri­va­te­ly fun­ded in­sti­tu­ti­ons (e.g. mu­se­ums, ar­chi­ves, as­so­cia­ti­ons, com­pa­nies) and pri­va­te in­di­vi­du­als in Ger­ma­ny are al­so eli­gi­ble to ap­p­ly in ad­di­ti­on to pu­blic in­sti­tu­ti­ons. The Foun­da­ti­on pro­vi­des fun­ding for sys­te­ma­tic in­ven­to­ry as­sess­ments and ba­sic re­se­arch on the his­to­ri­cal con­text of Na­zi cul­tu­ral pro­per­ty con­fis­ca­ti­ons as well as for the in­de­xing of ar­chi­ve hol­dings and the re­con­struc­ti­on of pri­va­te col­lec­ti­ons that we­re sei­zed, di­vi­ded up or de­stroy­ed un­der the Na­zi re­gime as a re­sult of per­se­cu­ti­on.

Cla­ri­fi­ca­ti­on of the pro­ve­nance of pri­va­te col­lec­ti­ons is al­so eli­gi­ble for fun­ding if the­re is a su­spi­ci­on of con­fis­ca­ti­on as a re­sult of per­se­cu­ti­on.

Sin­ce Ja­nu­a­ry 2019, the Foun­da­ti­on has al­so fun­ded pro­jects that ser­ve to iden­tify the heirs of ob­jects from col­lec­ti­ons sei­zed as a re­sult of per­se­cu­ti­on for which pro­ve­nance re­se­arch has al­rea­dy be­en car­ried out. The aim of pro­po­sals in this fun­ding area should be to re­ach a just and fair sett­le­ment with the heirs in the spi­rit of the Wa­shing­ton Prin­cip­les of 1998 and the Joint De­cla­ra­ti­on of 1999.

Re­se­arch area “Co­lo­ni­al Con­texts”

Sin­ce the be­gin­ning of 2019, the Foun­da­ti­on has fun­ded long-term and short-term pro­jects re­la­ting to cul­tu­ral goods and col­lec­ti­ons from co­lo­ni­al con­texts.

The fol­lo­wi­ng are eli­gi­ble to ap­p­ly: in­sti­tu­ti­ons un­der pu­blic law and pri­va­te in­sti­tu­ti­ons that are re­co­gni­zed as non-pro­fit or­ga­ni­za­ti­ons in ac­cor­dance with § 59 in con­junc­ti­on with § 52 of the Ger­man Fis­cal Code (Ab­ga­ben­ord­nung). The ap­p­li­cant in­sti­tu­ti­on must be ba­sed in Ger­ma­ny and col­lect, pre­ser­ve or con­duct re­se­arch in­to cul­tu­ral and col­lec­ti­on ma­te­ri­al from co­lo­ni­al con­texts. This in­clu­des mu­se­ums, uni­ver­si­ties and other re­se­arch in­sti­tu­ti­ons.

The Foun­da­ti­on pro­vi­des fun­ding for con­cre­te re­se­arch in­to ob­jects, col­lec­ti­ons and lar­ger hol­dings, but al­so sup­ports ba­sic re­se­arch and re­se­arch on the his­to­ri­cal con­text whe­re this con­cerns is­su­es that are of fun­da­men­tal im­port­an­ce to pro­ve­nance re­se­arch beyond spe­ci­fic ob­jects. Both in­di­vi­du­al pro­jects and con­sor­ti­um pro­jects are fun­ded. Spe­ci­al at­ten­ti­on is gi­ven to co­ope­ra­ti­on with the so­cie­ties and coun­tries of ori­gin, which can be in­vol­ved in the pro­jects through co­ope­ra­ti­on. As of this ye­ar, it is al­so pos­si­ble to ap­p­ly for fun­ding for pro­jects de­aling with the in­de­xing, ca­ta­lo­guing and ana­ly­sis of ar­chi­val re­cords and do­cu­ments.
