Lynn Rother: Kunst durch Kredit. Die Berliner Museen und ihre Erwerbungen von der Dresdner Bank 1935
Lynn Rother, Senior Provenance Specialist at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, describes the transaction in which the State of Prussia bought more than 4,000 artworks from the Dresdner Bank for the Berlin museums for the huge sum of 7.5 million Reichsmarks on August 15, 1935. The transaction is explored here for the first time from an art historical and banking perspective. To this day, numerous works of art with Dresdner Bank provenance can be found in both public and private collections and—knowingly or unknowingly - continue to circulate on the art market.
