The Stadtbibliothek Bautzen returns another piece of Nazi confiscated property

Date 2016.04.05

The Stadtbibliothek Bautzen (Bautzen Municipal Libary) has returned a second piece of Nazi confiscated property. Provenance researchers stumbled across a four-volume edition of the encyclopaedia "Die neue Volkshochschule. Bibliothek für moderne Geistesbildung" (The New People’s College. Library for Modern Learning) from 1925.

The volumes had once belonged to the Bautzen Construction Trade Union and, through circumstances not yet precisely known, found their way into the collections of the municipal library. The books have now been returned to their legal successor, the IG Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt. Union representatives have agreed to leave the volumes in the collection of the municipal library so that the public may have access to them in the future.

The provenance research efforts were part of a project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. The Foundation has granted the library 168,000 euros in funding over the next three years to finance the systematic search for Nazi confiscated property.
