Restitution: Bayerische Staatsbibliothek returns books to Masonic Grand Lodge of Austria
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) has returned 30 valuable books to the Grand Lodge of Austria. The works have been identified as Nazi-confiscated property. When Austria was annexed to National Socialist Germany in 1938, the books were taken to Munich after Austrian lodges were closed down, leading freemasons were arrested and their possessions were taken away.
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has been actively engaged in provenance research since 2003. The German Lost Art Foundation has provided funding to support this research work since 2013.
