Federal Commissioner for GDR State Security Service Records (BStU) visits German Lost Art Foundation

Date 2017.01.16

Roland Jahn, Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former GDR, has visited the German Lost Art Foundation.

During the joint exchange, he found out more about the Foundation’s activities and key focus areas, and in particular about the current status of funding relating to the confiscation of cultural assets in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR. Mr. Jahn said he thought it was a good idea to systematically examine the archive holdings of the GDR State Security Service (Stasi) in relation to lost cultural assets. It would be conceivable for a finding aid to be created from this research, he said. Jahn also pledged to provide maximum support to the Foundation if the archive holdings of the GDR State Security Service could be of use to the Foundation’s research work. The archive would also treat the Foundation’s research requests as a priority, particularly given the historical and political importance of the remit of both institutions.
