Date 2017.03.09

In its notices (25 | 2016), the Museumsverband in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e. V. has presented the project “Provenance research in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – An initial check”, which has been under way since August 2016 and is funded by the German Lost Art Foundation for an initial period of two years.

The aim of the initial check is to reexamine a section of the history of selected small and regional museums in order to determine whether there are any suspected cultural assets seized through Nazi persecution (Nazi-confiscated property) in any of the collections. The initial check can subsequently determine whether or not there is a need for further, long-term provenance research.

The initial check research in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is focusing on items that were wrongfully seized from their Jewish, Communist, Social Democrat, Catholic or other owners during the Nazi period between 1933 and 1945, and which have ended up in the museums’ collections.
