Bayerische Staatsbibliothek restitutes 67 works

Date 2017.09.27

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library—BSB) has returned 67 books previously owned by the “Vereins katholischer Religionslehrer an den höheren Lehranstalten Bayerns” to its successor organization, the “Verband der katholischen Religionslehrer und Religionslehrerinnen an den Gymnasien in Bayern e.V.” (KRGB).

After resisting the pressure of “Gleichschaltung”, or the imposition of totalitarian control, for as long as possible, the association was dissolved by the Nazi regime in 1938 and its possessions liquidated. In 1938, the then Bavarian Ministry of Culture offered the association’s library to the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, which selected a total of 110 works and incorporated them into its holdings. With the aid of the acquisition list that had been passed down, it was possible to identify 67 titles from this list in the BSB’s holdings.

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has been actively engaged in provenance research since 2003. The German Lost Art Foundation has provided funding to support this research work since 2013.
