German Lost Art Foundation approves funding for 36 projects of provenance research

More and more Ger­man in­sti­tu­tions are con­duct­ing prove­nance re­search. To­day the Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­tion agreed to fund an ad­di­tion­al 36 re­search projects at mu­se­ums, li­braries, aca­dem­ic in­sti­tu­tions and archives. “In view of the high­est num­ber of projects to re­ceive fund­ing in 2015, we are hap­py to see a grow­ing aware­ness of re­search­ing the ori­gin of art­works, ob­jects and books,” said Uwe M. Schneede, mem­ber of the ex­ec­u­tive board of the Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­tion. The Foun­da­tion has al­lo­cat­ed more than four mil­lion eu­ros to prove­nance re­search this year alone.

The fund­ing re­cip­i­ents in­clude in­sti­tu­tions such as the Bay­erische Na­tional­mu­se­um in Mu­nich, the Mu­se­um­s­land­schaft Hes­sen Kas­sel and the Übersee-Mu­se­um Bre­men, the Bautzen mu­nic­i­pal li­brary, the Jew­ish Mu­se­um in Berlin, the Völk­erkun­de­mu­se­um Hei­del­berg, the Mu­se­ums­berg Flens­burg and the Gen­er­al State Archives in Karl­sruhe.

The Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­tion is the na­tion­al and in­ter­na­tion­al con­tact part­ner for all mat­ters per­tain­ing to the il­le­gal seizure of cul­tur­al as­sets in Ger­many in the 20th cen­tu­ry. The Foun­da­tion sup­ports prove­nance re­search with re­search grants and pro­vides in­for­ma­tion on re­ports of lost and found cul­tur­al as­sets via its open-ac­cess “Lost Art” database. Fund­ing ap­pli­ca­tions for longer-term re­search projects must be sub­mit­ted no lat­er than 1 April and 1 Oc­to­ber of each year.
