Save the date: panel discussion and digital conference "Die Peripherie im Zentrum", 13-15 November 2022

This November, the German Lost Art Foundation is once again holding its annual autumn conference: the digital conference entitled Die Peripherie im Zentrum. Vergessenes, Verdrängtes und Vernachlässigtes in der Provenienzforschung (“The periphery at the centre. What gets forgotten, repressed and neglected in provenance research”) on 14 and 15 November will focus on provenance research beyond the major cities and institutions – in the countryside, in border regions and in smaller museums. The focus is not on prominent works of art but on the frequently neglected objects such as household effects and belongings that were stolen from persecuted Jewish citizens during the National Socialist era. Rather than looking at the role of high-ranking National Socialist functionaries, light will be cast on the work done by museum curators in the provinces, for example. One particular focus will be on persecuted groups that have received little attention to date. Lynn Rother, Senior Provenance Specialist at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, describes the transaction in which the State of Prussia bought more than 4,000 artworks from the Dresdner Bank for the Berlin museums for the huge sum of 7.5 million Reichsmarks on August 15, 1935. The transaction is explored here for the first time from an art historical and banking perspective. More details: Lynn Rother: Kunst durch Kredit.
