Commemoration of the Victims of National Socialism

Today, Wednesday, January 27, 2021, the Bundestag commemorates the victims of National Socialism. Guest speakers will be the President of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, Dr h. c. Charlotte Knobloch, and the publicist Marina Weisband.

The Pres­i­dent of the Bun­destag, Dr Wolf­gang Schäu­ble, will open the com­mem­o­ra­tive hour at 11 a.m. with a wel­com­ing ad­dress in the ple­nary hall of the Re­ich­stag build­ing in Berlin. Fed­er­al Pres­i­dent Dr Frank-Wal­ter Stein­meier, Bun­desrat Pres­i­dent Dr Rein­er Haseloff, Fed­er­al Chan­cel­lor Dr An­gela Merkel and the Pres­i­dent of the Fed­er­al Con­sti­tu­tion­al Court, Prof. Stephan Har­barth, will al­so take part in the hour of re­mem­brance as fur­ther rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the con­sti­tu­tion­al bod­ies.

The "Day of Re­mem­brance for the Vic­tims of Na­tion­al So­cial­ism" was in­tro­duced in 1996 by then Fed­er­al Pres­i­dent Prof. Ro­man Her­zog. Since then, a memo­ri­al hour has been held an­nu­al­ly on or around Jan­uary 27 in the Bun­destag. The oc­ca­sion is the com­mem­o­ra­tion of the lib­er­a­tion of the sur­vivors of the con­cen­tra­tion and ex­ter­mi­na­tion camp Auschwitz by sol­diers of the Red Army on Jan­uary 27, 1945.
