Commemoration of the Victims of National Socialism
The President of the Bundestag, Dr Wolfgang Schäuble, will open the commemorative hour at 11 a.m. with a welcoming address in the plenary hall of the Reichstag building in Berlin. Federal President Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Bundesrat President Dr Reiner Haseloff, Federal Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel and the President of the Federal Constitutional Court, Prof. Stephan Harbarth, will also take part in the hour of remembrance as further representatives of the constitutional bodies.

The "Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism" was introduced in 1996 by then Federal President Prof. Roman Herzog. Since then, a memorial hour has been held annually on or around January 27 in the Bundestag. The occasion is the commemoration of the liberation of the survivors of the concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz by soldiers of the Red Army on January 27, 1945.
