On the death of Bernhard Purin (1963-2024)

The German Lost Art Foundation mourns the loss of the Director of the Jewish Museum Munich.

Bernhard Purin, the Director of the Jewish Museum Munich, died unexpectedly last week.

He was the founding director of this institution, which was newly established in 2002, and over a period of two decades he went on to turn it into a museum for the history of Judaism that gained an international standing. The Bregenz-born cultural studies expert was previously an influential figure at the Jewish museums in Hohenems in Vorarlberg, Vienna and Fürth. His idea was not only to reduce Jewish history to the perspective of the victims but to open up the museums to contemporary themes as well.

The international museum world has lost an outstanding museologist and excellent Judaica specialist.

The German Lost Art Foundation mourns the loss of a highly esteemed advisor.
