New volume published on the subject of photographs

German Lost Art Foundation publishes issue 2023 of the periodical "Provenance & Research".

The German Lost Art Foundation has published a new issue of the periodical Provenance & Research: in anticipation of the Foundation’s 2024 Spring Conference entitled Fotografie und Provenienzforschung [Photography and Provenance Research], the current volume in the series looks at the topic of photographs.

Research on photography has long been established in cultural studies, but the potential of this medium has not yet been fully explored in the area of provenance research. This issue explores the practical challenges involved in working with photographs in provenance research and also looks at the character of photographs as sensitive objects. It presents photographs as valuable sources – but also as victims of looting and confiscation.

The printed volume can be ordered from Sandstein Verlag Dresden (print edition) and will soon also be available electronically in open access on perspectivia.net under DOI 10.25360/01-2023-00043.

The spring conference will take place on 18 and 19 April 2024 at Leipzig University Library. Information on the programme and sign-up will be provided soon on this website.

The periodical Provenance & Research is published annually, with each issue also providing information on the latest findings from projects funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. It is aimed at media representatives and policymakers interested in the field, experts who work in archives, libraries and museums, and also research institutions and the art trade.
