Save the date: conference on photography in provenance research

Annual conference of the German Lost Art Foundation on 18 and 19 April 2024

The German Lost Art Foundation is holding its annual conference on 18 and 19 April 2024 2024 on the topic of photography in provenance research. The conference will be looking at the significance and role of photographs as key sources and also as material objects of provenance research – a highly topical subject but one that has rarely been explored to date.

There has been intense debate in provenance research regarding the informative value and quality of written sources and archival records, but there is a less well developed source-critical approach to photographic documents. The conference will discuss approaches to using photographs while also looking at the extent to which the items themselves are sensitive objects. The aim is to examine both the opportunities and risks involved in the digital editing of photographs. Current standpoints from the field of image and media studies will be included.

The conference is to be held in the lecture theatre of the Bibliotheca Albertina at Leipzig University Library and will bring together experts from provenance research and photography studies. The event will cover a broad topical spectrum, ranging from the value of photographs as sources to the problem of dealing with images of violence and questions of restitution.

Please note: The number of participants at the conference is limited. However, it will be streamed live on the Foundation’s YouTube channel and will be available afterwards in the event documentation at https://kulturgutverluste.de .

The detailed conference programme will be published in mid-February 2024 at https://kulturgutverluste.de.

At this time it will also be possible to sign up for the conference and panel discussion.
