German Lost Art Foundation approves funding for 36 projects of provenance research
More and more German institutions are conducting provenance research. Today the German Lost Art Foundation agreed to fund an additional 36 research projects at museums, libraries, academic institutions and archives.
“In view of the highest number of projects to receive funding in 2015, we are happy to see a growing awareness of researching the origin of artworks, objects and books,” said Uwe M. Schneede, member of the executive board of the German Lost Art Foundation. The Foundation has allocated more than four million euros to provenance research this year alone.
The funding recipients include institutions such as the Bayerische Nationalmuseum in Munich, the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel and the Übersee-Museum Bremen, the Bautzen municipal library, the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Völkerkundemuseum Heidelberg, the Museumsberg Flensburg and the General State Archives in Karlsruhe.
The German Lost Art Foundation is the national and international contact partner for all matters pertaining to the illegal seizure of cultural assets in Germany in the 20th century. The Foundation supports provenance research with research grants and provides information on reports of lost and found cultural assets via its open-access “Lost Art” database. Funding applications for longer-term research projects must be submitted no later than 1 April and 1 October of each year.
