Project kick-off at Museum Folkwang Essen

Project launch on the subject of German-German art trade relations and cultural property transfer

This week a new project on art trade relations and the transfer of items of cultural property between North Rhine-Westphalian institutions and the various art trade bodies of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) was presented by the Coordination Centre for Provenance Research in North Rhine-Westphalia (KPF.NRW).

The aim is to shed light on the trade channels and procedures used for the inter-state transfer of cultural property during the period 1945 to 1990. It is known that the KuA (Kunst und Antiquitäten GmbH) in the former GDR was in contact with more than 60 partners in NRW.

The two-year research project is funded and supported by the German Lost Art Foundation. Based on items that can be shown to have been transferred from the former GDR to cultural institutions and collections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the aim is to establish a basis for more in-depth research. Archival papers and historical documents will also yield information on the structures and procedures used by the authorities, institutions and players involved. The project will involve a systematic compilation of essential sources, while networks are also being developed to facilitate future research and individual case studies.
